Bike First Friday Raleigh!!

On the first friday of the month, every month, the galleries in Raleigh stay open late and there is a big art walk. Trouble is, the galleries are a little too spread out to actually walk...so we started riding bikes. We started a bike gang...and then others started rival bike gangs...and we merged. Last week we had our strongest showing yet.

You are all welcome to come. We meet at 6:30 at the belltower on Hillsborough st in Raleigh, on the first friday of the month. Hope to see you there.

Real Borscht

If you want to set off an Eastern European/Russian person, bring up Borscht. The problem is that the word is so vague and simply references the soup eaten in that area of the world which contains beets, potatoes, tomatoes, and usually cabbage. Other than these basic four ingredients the process and final product varies tremendously form country to country, and also from village to village.

My Grandfather is an amazing, detail oriented cook, and takes immense pride in his recipe. He has strong feelings about every aspect of his process and is quick to point out flaws in other common styles of Borscht.

We went to the farmers market yesterday and bought what we could there, then to Harris Teeter for a few other ingredients, then to the Grand Asia Market for soup bones, which are not sold in this day-in-age at the average grocery store... I think because no one cooks anymore. But my Grandpa gets worked up about it so much that he stutters a bit when talking about

"Those damn bouillon cubes that they make in factories. Fresh ingredients taste better...Fresh stock is different"

In all, we cooked for 6 hours and now have about 4 gallons of some of the best soup
I have ever eaten.

Unfortunately I was in Seattle for Christmas and did not get to spend it with my family, but I still got a good dose of holiday cheer from the Reynolds family. Gene(my sister's husband's brother, who pilots a Chinook Helicopter(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CH-47_Chinook -if you don't know, now you know) for the Army), his wife Tami(who is also a helicopter pilot), and thier two energetic munchkins, Christian and Abbey, graciously invited me into thier home for Christmas dinner and an impromptu dance a thon.

Storm Recovery Seattle

There was a strong storm which went through Seattle last week knocking out power to 1.5 million people. A friend of a friend works for a storm relief team called Recovery Logistics Incorporated, which was called to Seattle to help restore the cell phone network, and called Friday at 6pm to see if I would be available to go. I was able, and I met them two hours later with my bags to work all night loading 50 8,000lb diesel generators on to tractor trailers and then headed straight for the airport. We chartered a flight from RDU to Seattle Saturday morning.

In a day and a half we "commandeered(took over without asking)" this parking lot and set up the operation.

I work in the Logistics Command Post. We track the generators, electricians, and truckers, and have been working in 20hr shifts. Needless to say we are exhausted, but everyone is working that hard. We have made huge progress in the past few days, and now I have time to put up a post.

Sarah and I went out to the wine region of NC last night and stayed at Elkin Creek Winery. There are a few little cabins just across the creek which can be rented, which were very nice, but if you want to stay there you should call because they are not listed on the websight.

This is Ryan Hudgins(left) and Head chef Jesse Williams(right). We had a damn good meal. If you are in the area, it is well worth a stop.

The 2005 barrel tasting

The 2005 is ready to be bottled, I just need to get some bottles. Yesterday I took all of the wine out of the barrel to clean out the sediment and then siphoned it all back in. It is clean, looks and tastes good.

Meadowhood

The last battle of the 2006 season at Meadowhood finished up yesterday with devastating matches between the classic Wimblehood stars. Epic doubles matches went on into the evening when Meadowhood grounds crews had to scramble for alternate lighting sources. Tournament players shared the evening together over dinner, reminiscing of the days great plays, and of Wimblehoods of yore.
It was a good year, and until the next unseasonably
warm day, thanks Meadowhood.

El Pueblo Cup Champions....Again!

I have been playing on a team sponsored by the concrete company Miller and Long for about two years. Last year we won the league tournament, the State Cup, and we went to play in El Salvador. Sunday, we took the cup again winning 1-0. In the first pic, the left side if from the spanish newspaper "Que Pasa" from last year and the pic on the right is from Sunday. Since I have been back in the states, I have been going up to DC on the weekends to play in one of the biggest tournaments on the east coast. Today, I scored the winning goal in the last 4 min of the game to put us through to the quarter finals next weekend.

The Dead Brothers

In lieu of an outdoor concert in the park, it was held indoors because of the monsoon which was falling from the sky last night. The Pussywarmers, a local group, opened for The Dead Brothers. They played in the hallway that led to the doors of the theater. An interesting blend of barber shop quartet and bluegrass. A snare drum, a stand up bass, a banjo, and an accordion.

The Dead Brothers and the Pussywarmers performed a song together at the beginning of the second set. The Dead Brothers eclectic, New Orleans style music was haunting and at times hilarious. At some point in time the trumpet/tuba player went out into the crowd and the lead singer killed him, only to come back to life and play the trumpet from the back of the theater. And later in the show the lead singer stumbled through the crowd singing through a bullhorn, and shouting at the rest of the group.

I went to Milan yesterday to watch the game on the plaza in the center.

France scored first and there were unhappy ones....

Italy scored next, and there were happy ones...

The party began right after the game....

This guy was our Pied Piper. After the game he started playing and we started dancing on the steps of the Duomo(the big church) into the wee wee hours of morning.

Then I started talking with some people and one of them let me crash at his place, and all was well in Italia....

Concerto in Biasca

My band had our first concert yesterday in Biasca, Switzerland. We played at an outdoor festival with 6 other bands on the side of a huge mountain. . For our first concert together it went well. Ahh yes...Italian trains again. Then, even better, low cost airlines. I flew on Smart Wings...they delayed the flight 3 hours...then when we finally left, for some reason we didn't go to Prague, we went to Rome. Why, I still do not know. Then we went to Prague. We got there 6.5 hours late at 12:30am.

In the center of the city, on the biggest plaza, the city put up a huge screen where we watched many games, including the game in which Cezch lost. There were a few thousand people there and it was crazy.

This English fan had a few of the $1 monster beers.

At the Splashtival concert last week I met a bunch of kids who are artists and musicians, and remind me so much of our Raleigh crew. I didn't think there were kids like this here in Swissland. Here are some pics from my friend Michelle's concert and some of the kids I have been hanging out with.

In lieu of the day of the devil, my friend and I went swimming in the lake at a place they call the "Devil's Point". I have not figured out why exactly it is called that, but the name goes back 800 years or so.

Splashtival

There was a huge party in the city center's plaza last night called Splashtival. It was free, and I think a good portion of the population of the city came out for some part of it. The Blue Man Group played, then we were directed to go across the street the lake shore for a 35 min firework and laser show set to classical and dance music. Then we all went back to the plaza and danced well into the morning while three DJ's played.
